The Fran McGillivray band

Featuring Mike Paice - Saxophone & Harmonica

CD ‘Midnight Call’ launch at Brooks Blues Bar

"Splendid!" Paul Jones Radio 2

"Mighty good!" Maverick Magazine

“A new twist on old music”. Rock 'n' Reel Magazine

Fran McGillivray, (vocals, bass guitar & flute), and Mike burke, ( acoustic, electric & resonator guitars, mandola, mandolin & vocals), and Roger Nunn, ( drums, percussion & vocals) are an exciting and compelling trio with a strong following on the blues and roots music scene . Founder members of the legendary urban blues outfit So Long Angel, Fran and Mike have spent many years honing their craft and have developed a unique take on roots music and an amazing empathy on stage.

Fran and the boys will be reunited for this show with another ex-So Long Angel member Mike Paice on saxophones and harmonica to launch the new Fran McGillivray Band CD “Midnight Call”. Mike, who is a mainstay of the Dana Gillespie Band, is a much sought after and critically acclaimed musician, and a firm favourite of the Brooks Blues Bar audience.

Early live appearances included playing in the backing bands for touring US artists Inez Foxx and JJ Barnes, where they learned a great deal about stagecraft and professionalism. Since then they have performed at many major festivals in Europe and the UK including Rotterdam, Cambridge, and Shrewsbury. They have shared the bill with iconic guitarists Bert Jansch, John Renbourne and Davy Graham as well as major artists such as Bob Dylan and Elvis Costello. Recent collaborations include the Spikedrivers Blues Roots Revue Tour and a series of shows with Brooks Williams, PJ Wright and Pete Smith under the banner “Guitar Massive”.

Roger Nunn spent five years drumming with So Long Angel and now brings his passion and skills as both player and sound engineer to the trio. Roger is a great student of percussion from around the world; he studied djembe in South Africa and features this drum extensively in live shows and on recordings alongside kit drums and a variety of percussion instruments.

In their live shows, Fran and Mike’s own vibrant and original compositions are complemented by soulful, dynamic and powerful interpretations of Americana and Blues songs.

JIM KWESKIN (USA)

AND

DAVE PEABODY

Jim Kweskin (USA) & Dave Peabody - a rare UK visit from ‘60’S legend Jim Kweskin plus support from Dave Peabody

Jim Kweskin Bio

"There are only a handful of people who molded the early folk scene in America at the start of the '60s. And surely one is Jim Kweskin."

- Bentley's Bandstand, The Morton Report, 2016

In the 1960s Jim Kweskin led the groundbreaking Jug Band, admired and imitated by everyone from folk and blues musicians to rockers like the Lovin’ Spoonful and the Grateful Dead. They had Janis Joplin (with Big Brother & The Holding Company) and Linda Ronstadt (with The Stone Ponys) as opening acts. Bob Dylan co-billed with Kweskin in Greenwich village. Kweskin's band played blues and ragtime, good time jazz and novelties, reaching back to the roots of American music: field recordings from the Library of Congress and the rural artists reissued in the 1950s on Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music. Kweskin played alongside masters like Mississippi John Hurt, Sippie Wallace, Maybelle Carter, and Clayton McMichen, artists who grew up in times and places where this music was an integral part of their communities. Since this auspicious start, Kweskin continues to break ground with his incredible guitar work and vocals, while keeping American music traditions vibrant. He has toured and recorded with long-time friends and collaborators (among them, Jug Band co-founders Geoff Muldaur, Maria Muldaur, and Bill Keith) as well as newer faces in the folk world (Samoa Wilson, Meredith Axelrod, Juli Crockett).

As Kweskin says,“We are the elders now, whether we want to be or not. And we like a lot of different styles, and play a lot of different things, but we feel like we have a duty to introduce younger people to this music, to keep the tradition alive.”www.jimkweskin.com
